Policing and Justice

The Official Opposition believes in keeping citizens safe.

• We commit to funding Municipal policing agencies sufficiently to ensure that promised manpower thresholds can be met.

• Develop a Unified Family Court system for Alberta, which provides a single forum for families or individuals to address legal issues that arise out of a family breakdown.  This is a proven success in most other Canadians jurisdictions; the UFC model has proven to be more appropriate for litigants and more cost-effective than the present fragmented model.

• Develop an independent civilian tribunal to investigate allegations of police misconduct.  Although some municipalities (Calgary) have developed an independent review mechanism the Province should take the lead in developing a review paradigm for use in all our larger municipalities.  The Law Enforcement Review Board hears appeals only; this is no longer adequate to maintain public confidence in municipal police forces.  In addition, the Edmonton Police Union has requested such measures be taken in order to improve morale amongst the members.

• Adopt the Braidwood Commission’s recommendations on the use of Tasers.

• Ensure that monies raised through fines or from confiscated property are distributed to Victims of Crime and groups that meet the requirements for grants under the fund as soon as is practicable.
